Christianlikeswhiskey Report post Posted February 9, 2015 Hello All! I have reached out to many USA tanneries within the last few weeks to find a new source of leather. I am currently using Oil Tanned sides not tanned in the states and wanting to order from an American tannery. After reaching out to Wickett & Craig, Horween, Herman Oaks, and S.B. Foot regarding my needs I have really just received their product details. I would like to hear from fellow leather workers what their views are on these tanneries and which would be my best bet. I hate making decisions without a few recommendations. I currently make men's bag and wanting to put out a new line using the new leather. Attached is a photo of a bag I have made (dont mind the unfinished edges!). I would like the leather to be similar to what is shown. Cheers!
thefanninator Report post Posted February 10, 2015 Did you get samples from the tanneries you contacted? Horween and Wicket & Craig will send out free swatches. Not sure about the others.
RRobinette Report post Posted February 16, 2015 Certainly is frustrating - returning to the leather industry after doing something else for 30 years. Almost all of my sources are gone but 2, and I think one of them is on the way out. But I will recommend Hide and Leather House in Napa, CA. They are WONDERFUL to work with, will send samples, and have a wide variety of hides, upholstery, garment, latigo, etc. A nice oil tan side you could probably get from them. http://www.hidehouse.com They also have a wholesale login and have stuff on sale a lot.
