Ambassador pete Posted March 6, 2015 Ambassador Report Posted March 6, 2015 Been tooling for a number of years now and just asked myself a basic (i think) question. When cutting out pieces, patterns, etc, does it matter if you cut the grain side or the flesh side? I know that I am more comfortable drawing out the pattern darkly with a pen or sharpie on the flesh side rather than lightly on the grain side, but does it matter? Quote

Contributing Member JLSleather Posted March 7, 2015 Contributing Member Report Posted March 7, 2015 It doesn't "matter" which side it's cut from if the knife is vertical. Even when die cut, the burr side and break side will be within thousandths of an inch. But I cut grain side up, since I want to see the leather I'm cutting. Also, many of my patterns are "innies" instead of "outties". Quote "Observation is 9/10 of the law." IF what you do is something that ANYBODY can do, then don't be surprised when ANYBODY does.
Ambassador pete Posted March 7, 2015 Author Ambassador Report Posted March 7, 2015 so you don't get a cleaner cut flesh side- and it isn't easier to mark up without lines or ink on the grain? Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted March 7, 2015 Contributing Member Report Posted March 7, 2015 I use a scratch awl mostly... but sometimes use a pen if I'm gonna take off the edge with a edger anyway Quote "Observation is 9/10 of the law."
