calanneh Report post Posted November 16, 2008 (edited) OK folks, yall have seen a few pix and threads of soem of my various projects. A pic of the finished product is attached for your amusement! The hat and boots from patterns made from true recovered Viking articles. The belt, pouches and wrist cuffs were ones I just made for the Fest, but they are pretty standard designs. tashabear Report post Posted November 16, 2008 Nice! Now you need legwraps: http://users.bigpond.net.au/quarfwa/Miklag...s/legwraps1.htm (I'm still trying to make time to make some for my husband.)

RuehlLeatherWorks Report post Posted November 17, 2008 You could make leg wraps the way I did; 2 yards of scrap canvass. Sure, they're not period cloth, but when they're being used for that purpose, it doesn't really matter, you know? It's a basic costume. I know it's Texas and all, but it's odd seeing a viking costume without a cloak!

I know it's Texas and all, but it's odd seeing a viking costume without a cloak! Well, it was in the high 60s or low 70s for most of the day. I had an undershirt on and I was very comfortable. If I had a cloak....I would have been sweltering. I got a PM asking about a few of the costume pieces, so I am attaching close-ups to this message. I don't have any of the belt or the small right side pouch. I will take a few and upload them tomorrow. William
RuehlLeatherWorks Report post Posted November 18, 2008 The turnshoes turned out quite nicely!
calanneh Report post Posted November 18, 2008 The turnshoes turned out quite nicely! Thanks Bro!! They are a little big...kinda floppy like duck feet. I plan to wet them down and try to shrink them a little. William

calanneh Report post Posted November 18, 2008 I have a pair of these, and I really like them. I put a layer of foam padding and then some regular workboot gel insoles in mine and they feel great! I walked around all day and only felt a few rocks or whatever thru them.
DavidG Report post Posted November 19, 2008 (edited) Very nice setup! I plan on going viking (a wiking we will go!) myself for the Georgia and NC Faires in 2009 and will probably do a pair of turnshoes. When I first saw your hat I thought it was great work even though it didn't appeal to me personally. I really like it with the full setup. Oh, and since I'm not a tailor of any sort I'm getting my tunic, undertunic, and pants from Garb the World. It's a pretty good resource if you need basic garb at a decent price and they don't charge extra for plus sizes, which is great as I am a ginormous dude. Now you need a sword. calanneh Report post Posted November 19, 2008 I got my shirt at the TX Ren Fest in 2006. Paid like $15 bucks for it on the markdown rack. It is a nice roomy 3X. The hat on it's own looks dorky, but with the whole emsemble, I like the effect. If I ever do another one, I will make it wider and shorter so it does not sit so high on my head. I have a short sword (15" long) but I havent had time to make a proper sheath for it, so I did not wear it. I bought a medium length sword (28") at the fest. I will be making sheaths for them both over the next year. I will probably put the short sword on my hip and the other across my back. My goal is to get a true claymore sword and carry that across my back. Make sure you upload pix of your outfit as you make your pieces!! DavidG Report post Posted November 20, 2008 (edited) Nice! I'm a 4x myself, so I have to go custom, all the off-the-rack stuff stops at 3X around here. I usually wear a kilt to the Ren Fest, but being a guy I had to buy my sword before I had any garb: When I get a Viking setup going I'd like to get this scramasax and this sword as the look I'm going for is late period viking look after they started interbreeding with the Celts.
