RVP Report post Posted March 28, 2015 Can someone tell me how to remove nickle plating off of -D-rings and buckles? I want to get back to the raw steel material. I don't have access to electrolysis equipment but do have access to lots of different chemicals I could use.
Redrum Report post Posted March 28, 2015 The only way is to sand or grind it off.It would probably be easier to make your own.
BIGGUNDOCTOR Report post Posted March 28, 2015 The equipment to do it by reverse plating isn't that hard to come by. A rock tumbler will also do it, but that will take awhile.
Thornton Report post Posted March 29, 2015 Nitric acid. I used it to remove nickel plating from brass. You might have a problem with the steel underneath reacting with the acid. Don't ask me where to get it. We use it at work for passivating stainless steel.
BIGGUNDOCTOR Report post Posted March 29, 2015 I wonder if citric acid would work, that is also used for passivating stainless..

Colt W Knight Report post Posted March 30, 2015 Computer Board Etchant Solution sold at radioshack will strip nickel plating. I have only used it to age/ relic before, so I don't know what the bare metal would look like if you left it in there long enough to strip all the nickel off. Its about 8$ a bottle.
