Members LLWork Posted March 30, 2015 Members Report Posted March 30, 2015 I haven't really been taking any custom motorcycle mask orders in a while as I'm trying to figure out a new shop situation, but when I got a request for a "dirty, wrinkly bulldog" it piqued my interest. I like it when the descriptions I get leave plenty of room for artistic interpretation. Anyways, after staring at pictures of bulldogs for much longer than I cared to keep track of, I had my plan and got to work on this thing. Photos sent to the customer, and he approves it. I ask him what color preferences he has and he leaves that decision up to me. So I decide to try a thinned out coat of white, so as to see a bit of the flesh color underneath, and then spot on top of the white with some oil brown. Here's a test run at that concept. Now the white seems to be a little stronger in the photo than it actually is when it's in your hands, just a faint flesh color shows. Anyone care to give me some thoughts or suggestions? I'd greatly appreciate it! Quote

Members billybopp Posted March 31, 2015 Members Report Posted March 31, 2015 I love the mask. That's awesome! But white leather dye totally sucks ... Worse than useless. That is the path to heartbreak and pain. I have tried a few types and found nothing but disappointment. If you need white, go with white acrylic paint. Bill Quote

Bill That was actually part of the reason why I'm thinking about using it. You're talking about how it ends up cracking and flaking, right? When you get a request for "custom ugly", it seems like a decent way to accomplish it, haha. Also, my local Tandy guy swears that he's found the solution to the problem with the white. He adds floor wax to his. Sorry, no comments other than this is a hilariously awesome project. Good luck. That's a good enough comment for me! Quote
Members Oldtoolsniper Posted April 3, 2015 Members Report Posted April 3, 2015 That is a Marines dream mask! That is really cool! I need to make one so I can chase stray dogs out of the yard. I'm already the crazy guy at the street according to my neighbors. Quote

I'm already the crazy guy at the street according to my neighbors. Indeed, this was a request from a Marine. I see you're from Iowa. I spent three years in Hiawatha, part of Cedar Rapids. Didn't get as much input as I had hoped. Decided to play it a little safer and just put some oil light brown on it. After that dried, I applied another coat in the deeper areas, and am quite pleased with the result! Quote
