Roo Hide

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of making another bosal for my daughters pony, maybe around a 1/2 inch. I would like to try out the roo hide on it, but I've never used it before. Can you all give me some pointers on how, what, when, and where.

Is it better to buy a hide and cut your own lace or buy the precut lace?

How or what do you use to color the strings?

Where do you get your Roo from?

Is there anything else I should know about Roo before starting?

I am also going to need to make some mecate reins sized up for the pony and rider where is a good place to come up with some paracord? Who knows maybe in couple of years she'll have that pony (Emma) straight up in the bridle.

Thank you all for your time,

Rob Gerbitz

Hey Rob, It is always better to cut your own lace. That way you can have complete quality control. Remember that it bevels on the flesh side. You can get your roo from Hidecrafters, TLF, or Tandy. I think there are resources in Australia but there are importing issues some of the whip platters can comment. Whip patters cut it in straight length mostly and braiders cut in spirals.

I have been buying para cord at a local military surplus store (helps that I live in the shadow of Camp Pendleton). http://ubraidit.com/ also sells it as does most of the military surplus websites.

Rob, The best veg tanned roo hide is made by Packers tannery in Australia. Charles Hardtke imports from them. He has supplied me with exceptional quality hides for several years. He can be reached at 915-590-0088. Talk to Peter Hardtke. Use me, Keith Seidel, as reference. He will sell you one hide if you want or large quantity. You can cut and bevel with the same equipment that you use for rawhide. How do you cut your strings now? Special characteristics of roo hide... It narrows as it stretches, and has a memory, so will tighten some as you braid if you pull all of the stretch out. Cut slightly wider strings. If you tell me you're desired finished width, I can advise you for extra cuting width. Keith
