gbarber Report post Posted May 18, 2015 I just bought a Singer 29K1 machine and am having trouble with the stitch length. The machine seems to work fine but the least amount of stitches per inch I can get is 10-12. The regulator clamp is all the way down to the foot. If I move it up it gets worse. What parts should I look at for wear or problems?
Constabulary Report post Posted May 18, 2015 10-12 spi sounds like a very very worn machine. It is most likely the bell crank lever you have to replace and probably the feed motion ring. maybe some other parts too. Maybe this thread is helpful for you. I have restored a 29K1 last year: http://leatherworker.net/forum/index.php?showtopic=60554&hl=%20barn%20%20find
gbarber Report post Posted May 18, 2015 Thanks for the reply. I have since taken the head apart for inspection. The feed motion bell crank lever is a little worn but not bad. The feed motion slide bar also looked fine. What I did find was the bearing on the back of the ring slide bar was worn. Over the years it must have seized a number of times and was more of a hexagon shape than a round bearing. There is a lot of free play in the part that drives it. I think this may be my problem as that would be the same as a worn bell crank lever. The bearing is riveted on the bar and I don't know if they are available anywhere. May have to look for a complete slide bar. Anyone know they can be found?
Constabulary Report post Posted May 19, 2015 college sewing in the UK has a lot of 29K parts but I´m not sure if the rollers are the same but I assume they are. https://www.college-sewing.co.uk/Singer29K,29USewingMachineParts
shoepatcher Report post Posted May 19, 2015 gbarber, In the States, you can get the parts from Pilgrim Shoe. In Canada, I would try Landis Shoe. glenn
gbarber Report post Posted May 19, 2015 (edited) Thanks for the reply Glenn, I am having trouble matching the part numbers off my machine to any parts breakdown information I can find on line. Most of my numbers start with 22--- where as anything I can find start with 81,82,85, etc. for example my machine head is 22025 and the Feed motion ring slide bar is 22075. These numbers are clearly stamped on the part. I am looking for the slide bar bushing and have come up with 4 different numbers. I have 3 numbers for the machine head. Are there any sites that may have my part numbers or a cross reference that I could use? This is my first patcher and am enjoying working on and with it. I got it out of a guys basement and it needed a lot of cleaning. I have it sewing but I need to get the stitch length corrected. It is a 29K2. Serial #F9522075. Sorry I started out saying it was a 29 K1 but it is a K2. Thanks everyone for their help. Gerald Edited May 19, 2015 by gbarber
gbarber Report post Posted May 19, 2015 I have just notice something about my part numbers that may just be a coincidence . The number on the feed motion ring is the same as the last 5 numbers in the serial number, 22075. The number on the head may also be 22075 as the second last number is hard to read. I can't see any other part numbers without further breakdown. Could this mean something? Did Singer stamp each part to match the serial number of each machine?
