Members bgl500 Posted June 13, 2015 Members Report Posted June 13, 2015 Can anyone point me in the right direction on where to find a tutorial for a bag similar to this? I believe I'm actually fairly comfortable with designing the main components of the bag other than the end caps. Any info that could be provided on constructing and stitching end caps, either recessed like the image or flush, would be appreciated! Quote
Members DavidL Posted June 14, 2015 Members Report Posted June 14, 2015 (edited) I been playing around with various gussets. So far I haven't tried to create this type of gusset yet, I can't say for certain this is the correct way. How I would try to create this gusset/ end cap is to understand how it is constructed, what materials I can use and can't. One quick note - Two pieces of 1.5mm leather same length glued together in theory the piece on top should wrinkle. The top piece should be a somewhere from a mm to a cm shorter. A real life example - A track field has many lanes, the closest to the inside is a shorter run than the outer lane, same with the gusset. Use a measuring tape on the bottom piece of leather. The type of construction on the end cap is grain to grain, gusset is sewn to the strip, then to the main body. You can change the width of the strip to make the end cap more recessed or less. gusset.pdf Edited June 14, 2015 by DavidL Quote

Members DavidL Posted June 14, 2015 Members Report Posted June 14, 2015 (edited) Glad it was useful I made a new PDF. A few things were left out of the first one. Grooving the backside of the end cap is important to create a flatter bend, changing the measurements and tweaking the proportion slightly is necessary. gusset.pdf Edited June 14, 2015 by DavidL Quote
Members Nuttish Posted June 15, 2015 Members Report Posted June 15, 2015 Can you find a picture of the inside? I couldn't. I'm thinking the end caps are notched and wet molded on a form. 90º along a curve is difficult. The analogy is notching to sew convex curves in fabric — this illustration is on one that gets turned inside out, which is functionally similar to what you're doing. http://blog.megannielsen.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/clipandntoch1.jpg Quote

Your notch idea makes a lot of sense to me. Between this and DavidL suggestions I think I have something solid to work with. Thanks again guys! Quote

I have actually thought of that but have been unable to find any pictures of what their finished tool bag looks like before I purchase it. Quote
