smirak Report post Posted June 26, 2015 So, I just got my order in from Springfield. This is my first order and my first look at "real" leather in it's "raw" form. In my order, I got a 2lb bag of scraps for practice stuff. I also got a single shoulder of HO 3/4oz (~6 sqft). Lastly, I got a santé fe double shoulder (~14 sqft). The scraps were just that. I wasn't expecting much of anything there. The HO looks real good and consistent all the way through. No big issues with anything...However, the santé fe double that I got is another story...the "center" portion looks ok to me. However, there's one area with cuts in it and another area with scratches on it. probably about a sq ft each. Now, since this is my first buy of leather, trying to determine what is acceptable and what is not and worth a call to a supplier (not just SLC for example). Thanks, Kevin
Thor Report post Posted June 26, 2015 Kevin, what may be acceptable to me or anybody else may not be acceptable to you and if I would be you, I would go by my own judgement. This being said, minor scratches are pretty common if leather is being handled by various persons and shipped throughout the continent. Unless it states in the description that the leather may have some cuts this is something I wouldn't accept at all. Depending on the price and my project I may not even accept scratches caused by shipping or handling.
smirak Report post Posted June 26, 2015 Thanks for the reply Thor. Yeah, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The cuts appear to be superficial, and may actually even be cracks. The scratches aren't deep, but not sure if they show up after a dye application? I'm not sending back, nor do I think it's even worth a call to SLC. I just wanted to reach out and see what others say...again, since this is my first purchase, I was just wondering. I'm still going to use it up! If nothing else, I'll have a crapload of keyfobs!!
