Baseball Tooling Pattern

I just thought it was an interesting tooling pattern and wondered how he made that pattern. What stamping tool is being used? It also looks like there is a swivel knife cut through the center of the thread pattern.

I'm also guessing you could do a similar pattern with actual red thread!

That looks to me to have been done with an embossing plate. If you'll look at the football one it's easier to see. I think the red thread Idea would look better.
