WeiZhenTian Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Hello! I am relatively new to leather working, and a bit back when I bought my first set of tools (bought used online) this tool(?) was included with everything else. I have tried to look it up on the internet to see what it is, but not knowing what to really search for I have not been able to identify what it is or is used for exactly. It is a piece of antler about 5 inches long with a copper rod (3/16 inch diameter) protruding from the end about 1 inch. The other end is basically flat. The only thing I have found so far that is remotely similar to this is a homeade hole punch, but this isn't quite the same. Just really curious to know what it is as it looks to be something someone put a lot of time into making, and used quite a bit (the antler is very smooth!). Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks, Dusty
Art Report post Posted January 10, 2016 I don't what the purpose of the thing sticking out the end, but the antler works great as a slicker for edges etc. I have several. Art
WeiZhenTian Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Thanks, Art That's about the only use I've been able to find that involves an antler besides some uses in wet forming. Maybe he/she had some individual technique that this worked/was used for. The copper is very rough- scratched and small burrs. Whatever it was used for the copper was definitly seeing some abuse. chrstn53 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 I second TinkerTailor, a flint knapping tool first thing that came to mind when I looked at the tool especially with the copper end
LumpenDoodle2 Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Yes, It's for flint knapping. You use it for things like putting the notches in arrow heads.
WeiZhenTian Report post Posted January 10, 2016 Awesome! Thanks for the info! That would explain why the copper is so roughed up! Guess now I'll be watching videos on how to make arrow/spear heads. Gonna have to put it to use! Thanks again! Dusty
