Members TinkerTailor Posted February 3, 2016 Members Report Posted February 3, 2016 Maverick leather may have something, Siegel leather sells bookbinding leather in Cali. Be prepared to pay more for bookbinding leathers because bookbinders want impeccable hide. Some of the bigger saddlery suppliers will split any of their hides to any thickness for free or a small fee. Quote "If nobody shares what they know, we will eventually all know nothing." Members TCon Posted February 3, 2016 Author Members Report Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) Would any of you say that this is a good option for the inside pockets/lining to a wallet? http://www.leather-eshop.com/Calfskins-Natural-Greased-Leather-3rd-Grade.htm. I could ask them to split it to 2 oz, correct? Edited February 3, 2016 by TCon Quote

There are very few people on here that have used the italian leathers, while most have used hermann oak, w&c and horween. There are many options available to have leather split at the retailers of these leathers in the US, as well some of the tannerys will sell direct and split it as well. I should say i don't have as much experience in the US market as some, being a Canadian, I should also say that i have a local supplier in canada for italian veg and it is amazing stuff. Especially if all you have seen is tandy. Btw, I get real tuscan veg locally for the same price as tandy florence shoulders tanned in mexico...... I would not however order just a hide from italy sight unseen, ...yet. Quote "If nobody shares what they know, we will eventually all know nothing." Members TCon Posted February 3, 2016 Author Members Report Posted February 3, 2016 (edited) Thank you. That is certainly a helpful supplier for future projects. However, as a beginner, I really don't want to invest that kind of money (upper $300 range it appears) until I've practiced enough to feel confident to use that high quality stuff from Maverick. Members multivitamins Posted February 9, 2016 Members Report Posted February 9, 2016 Search PergamenaNY on etsy. They specialized on bookbinding leathers. They have thin .8mm aniline dyed goat vegetable tan leathers. Price per hide is only around 50usd. Good stuff. Quote
Members Nuttish Posted February 13, 2016 Members Report Posted February 13, 2016 I ask Wickett & Craig to split to ~2 oz for me all the time. It's a fine weight for wallet and bag pockets. Depending on the leather, you'll want them to sand and repaste the backs, but that doesn't add substantially to the price. The best part is that they have no minimums. The bad news is that they take their time. Quote
Members nrk Posted March 11, 2016 Members Report Posted March 11, 2016 I'm looking for 0.2 oz veg tanned leather. Tandy Leather does not really have 0.2 oz thickness, at least not any good selections. The best I can find is about 0.4 oz, which is far too thick for the inner pockets of a wallet (what I'm trying to make). Does anyone have any suggestions of where to look? SLC have. Called Calfskin 2/3 oz Quote
