bikemaniac Report post Posted February 9, 2016 Hi, I am struggling with my everyday boat shoes. After 1-2 years the upper sewing starts to fall apart: Due to the stress and abrasion in that area (it bends for every step), the heavy thread is slowly ripped in pieces. What type of thread (brand + name/model) can you recommend for this high stress area in order to permanently solve the problem? Lucas
Wizcrafts Report post Posted February 20, 2016 Probably #92 bonded nylon, which has 15 pounds breaking strength per stitch. If you have a patcher, use #92 bonded nylon, with #19 leather point needles. If you're hand sewing, get very thin leather point hand sewing needles and use a thimble or sewing palm to push them through. You can get more strength from #138 bonded nylon, or bonded polyester thread. It requires a #23 needle and will push a patcher to its limits.
bikemaniac Report post Posted February 20, 2016 Hi Wiz, I will def be handsewing again and just use the old holes. Why do you suggest such thin threads? Is nylon stronger and more abrasion resistant than polyester? What is the difference between bonded nylon and non-bonded nylon? Lucas
