Lining leather using canvas

Recommended Posts

Hi all, I'm not sure if this is the right place in the forum to ask this.

Has anyone have got experience using canvas as a lining? I want to use waterproof canvas as a lining for bags and wallets. What weight canvas should I be using?

I was working for couple of months is a company which fixes handbags. During that period I was inspecting and fixing hundreds of bags and from my experience I can say that the best ever lining is leather. Not suede, not canvas, cotton and nylon either. Thin calfskin, pigskin, lambskin, goat and sheep works well as a lining. They are easy to clean with generic leather cleaning products, the are easy to fix with leather patches also easy to apply colour work. When you make a handbag think about ladies makeup, coffee spills, dirt and grime. The same situation with wallets.

This is not a direct answer to your question, but I hope it will help you with your creations and orders ;)

I have to agree with Misarins.  I would not use a canvas.  You would have to get a extremely light weight canvas to get the right thickness to get the job done and then there is a strength factor.  Pigskin and lambskin is extremely thin and strong.  This is what I use.   Good Luck!

Thanks so much guys. I think it's best to use leather to line too. just wondering if there are other possibilities. A friend of mine bought some felt for lining. I am waiting for his thoughts on that after he uses it. I have bought some sheepskin now though I would prefer to pigskin. But i want my products to be religion friendly. haha
