Hidden-stitch cantle binding

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know how to do a hidden-stitch cantle binding?

I've seen it done and seen the results - you can't see the stitches in back because they are hidden in a slit in the cantle binding leather (I don't have any pictures) - but I don't remember the specifics of how to do it.

Julia, the way I do it is.........after I fit the binding for length / width etc., I cut a slit about 3/8" deep into the bottom edge of the binding. This makes the "flap". I glue the binding on a little bit damp, and fold the flap up as needed as I sew the binding on. When finished sewing, I carefully put a little glue inside the flap, dampen lightly the flap, then rub it down smooth. JW

Hi Julia,

There are different tools for cutting different types of slits but I find it easiest to use a sharp round knife and cut a slit like JW described. Best to edge the backside with a very fine edger after it's installed and the flap is glued down.

Beautiful binding, and that's exactly what I needed to know. Thank you both.

A good way to make the cut is to take a wooden yard stick and clamp the bind down with the stick on top of the bind, them make your cut, this can make the cutting process much easier than just holding the leather with your hands. I use a straight knife but a round knife works fine also.

Steve,

Thanks for the tip. I can see one less scar on my thumb doing that. Have a good Christmas.
