Help! Presser foot slamming into feed dog

Recommended Posts

I have a Consew 226R that I've been using for a couple of years. It's been a great machine, but there is one thing I can't seem to fix. At some time soon after I got it I did some timing adjustment with some phone help from the shop I bought it from. Ever since then the presser foot seems to come too far down and if I start sewing fast it sounds like the feet are slamming against the feed dog, just seems like they shouldn't be hitting against each other that hard. I've tried adjusting the timing again and also the height of the feed dog. I'm not sure what else to try and am not finding anything that sounds right in the manual. Any suggestions out there?

hard to tell from the distance - can you make a small Video? Is is possible that your feed dog is too high?

Good idea! I will get a video made soon. I already tried adjusting the feed dog to make it lower, and that didn't seem to make a difference.

It seems that a combination of high foot lift, high sewing speed and very thin material may cause some apparent banging of the presser foot against the feed dog. In general, the faster you intend to sew the lower the foot lift should be, otherwise physics gets in the way.

Your Consew 226R is probably a close enough relative to a Juki LU-563 that my adjustment video might be useful to you, at least to figure how to change certain settings:

Thanks for your response Uwe. What you say makes sense, I didn't consider changing the foot lift. I will try that. I'd already been watching that video on Youtube to make the other adjustments and it's been so helpful! Thanks so much for putting those videos out into the world, they are SO much easier and more helpful than the manual I have!

Uwe, I just adjusted the foot lift to be lower. We'll see how that changes things. Though this got me curious, what's the reason why one would want to adjust the foot lift?

Brandyb, did it help to lower the foot lift as I have the same problem?
