Members memheli Posted June 29, 2016 Members Report Posted June 29, 2016 Hi all, Looking form some product advice here. I've been working on very simple leather projects for a few months now and have decided I want to buy a kit of dies and swivel knife. I already have mallets, awl, a variety of stitching forks, but no dyeing tools. I know tandy has the starter set which includes a cheap wooden mallet (don't need) and three patterns (which I also don't need) for 50$. They also sell the same set of tools, although they appear to be made of different metal, on the wall in a bag for 10$ more? I don't mind spending a bit more, maybe 75$, just wondering if you guys have some sage advice here before I pull the trigger on something. memheli Quote
MADMAX22 Posted July 1, 2016 Report Posted July 1, 2016 The best advice I can give ya is look at various peoples work that mimics what you want to do then either ask them what they started with or look at there how to blogs or forum post and see what they actually use. Look on ebay and craigslist for occasional deals. At that price range tandy or springfield leather are really your only options or second hand which is good also. Quote
bikermutt07 Posted July 1, 2016 Report Posted July 1, 2016 Springfield Leather has some good starter sets. I even read in the description that if you already have a few of the tools in the set they will work with you on swapping or omitting tools in the set. I would call them. In the beginning, I bought a lot of things (from tandy) I never use in. Have fun. Quote I'm not paying 80 bucks for a belt!!! It's a strip of leather. How hard could it be? 4 years and 3 grand later.... I have a belt I can finally live with. Stitching is like gravy, it's only great if you make it every day. From Texas but in Bossier City, Louisiana.
