Members SouthernCross Posted August 15, 2016 Members Report Posted August 15, 2016 What is the recommended type of stain and finish for simple wallets that will be carried in a back pocket? I've made a couple of really simply wallets and stained them with Fiebings alcohol based dye followed by a finish of Tandy's Super Sheen. When the wallets get wet from summer sweat they feel kinda "gummy" as the Super Sheen is apparently not very water resistant. I'd like to find something that will highlight my basketweave stamping. Any recommendations are greatly appreciated. Quote
Members CampbellCraft Posted August 15, 2016 Members Report Posted August 15, 2016 I use the professional oil dyes. Leather stays softer and the dye stays in place. Then a couple coats of Obenaufs Heavy Duty LP. Good luck! Like so.....but no dye on this one. Quote
Members SouthernCross Posted August 15, 2016 Author Members Report Posted August 15, 2016 Thanks. I've got some LP that I use on my boots - never thought about using it for anything else. Quote
Boriqua Posted August 15, 2016 Report Posted August 15, 2016 Im not sure how long you are letting it dry but ... I prefer to use a 60/40 split of water to resolene. When I spray it you can watch the concoction just suck into the leather. First you have to buff the piece until you dont see any dye come up on your rag. Different colors and manufacturers means different amounts of rubbing but so long as nothing is coming up on my clean rag I am good. After I have done a few coats of the resolene and water and ensured it absorbed then I might throw on some super sheen for effect but it depends on the product. Anything subjected to sitting in a back pocket full of ass sweat will not need super sheen for anything but selling the product. I prefer the diluted resolene because it actually gets down in the leather. Quote
