laying out fine stitches

Hello all,

I have been reading and trying to prepare myself for launching this great hobby.

I have found overstitch tools that will help me layout holes for stitches in the 5, 6 or 7 holes and that seems fine for items like belts and holsters (which I hope to make) but for smaller items like business card cases or watch bands I have seen up to 10 holes per inch recommended but I cannot find an overstitch tool that will help me lay out stitches this fine. How is this most effeciently accomplished?

You need to look out for a pricking iron that will lay out the stitches at the spacing you require. I'm not sure where you might get one in the US as I haven't seen anything that fine in the Tandy catalog - check out Bowstock in the UK. They are in Kidderminster. They have a good range of quality English saddlery tools.

Last I recall, Seigel has the pricking irons in the US. There are also a couple in the UK, though the names escape me at the moment. You can also try e-bay. Your best bet for overstitch/stitching wheel is to call Bob Douglas (Douglas Tools -- http://www.leatherworker.net/suppliers.htm). He refurbishes (for lack of a better term) old hand tools.

Contact Bob douglas in Sheridan Wy. He will have old osborne, mcmillan, and gomph overstitch markers as well as stitch markers you are looking for. Greg

I'm not sure if this will help you, but I always make the holes for handstitching with a sewing machine without any top or bottom thread.Try to use a leather needle. Sorry if this doesn't work.
