Jed,

I have the Harwood video's if you would like to borrow them. Let me know and I'll put 'em in the mail. It's nice to see someone your age so interested in the craft.

haulbuilt,

I really appreciate the offer but i just bought a set of his dvd's a few weeks ago. been glued to the tv ever since to.. lol. It's amazing to watch Mr. Harwood use his tools (which are incredibly sharp!!!) and build such a fine quality rig in three days. It took a little saving but i would say the dvds were worth every penney spent. Thanks anyway though! again i realy appreciate!

Tk,

I paid the same price for everything that is advertised on Barrys web site. Call Wayne to get one of his catologs but his stuff runs a little more that barrys.Still have a lot left on the list to get but i just have to keep chipping away at it. I'v been trying to save up for a high quality tree though so my tool buying has been on hold.

I agree with Bruce completely. My personal preference is not so much the maker but the age. I like to go to auctions and look for old servicable tools. I have a friend that found a box of "stuff" he got for $200 at an auction, (the box itself was cool and worth $200) and the first thing he picked up out of it was an old 8" skiver. From there on he was "pickin tall cotton". I took inventory with him and he had to have gotten consevatively, $6-$7000 worth of stuff. I haven't found one of those yet, but I am still lookin". Anyway, bottom line is like the guys have said it is what fits your budget. For me I think it will be good to learn how to sharpen all the various knives and edgers. They all work good when they are really sharp, and the old ones seem to hold an edge better.

Happy Trails!

I too can testify with many others that Bob Douglas makes about the finest-sharpest-prettiest bisonette and turnback edgers that are available. I was lucky to get a complete set of each from him in February. They're worth every cent too. Even my work looks nicer too. :)

RE MAULS: Unless I missed it somewhere in the previous messages, don't forget: Bob Beard doesn't make them anymore. Hasn't for a couple of years now when his raw materials costs increased beyond a point where he could make and sell mauls competitively. SO . . . unless you can find a used Bob Beard maul, there are no more to be had.
