Jnorma Report post Posted November 2, 2016 Hey all. im not exactly new to leatherworking. ive made pretty functional things so far. mostly sheaths. but they are very basic(my stitching could use a lot of work, though) i want to get more into the carving part of it all. i started out about a year and a half ago and made a dog collar for one of the pups. proud to say it held a Pyrenees/ st bernard mix for a year and a half until he died (nigh on 17 years old.) he was buried with it. it was my first attempt at actually tooling anything. and it turned out pretty decent id say. everything else ive done has been completely plain. just a sheath for this knife here, a belt there. simple stuff. no decoration. but then i had to leave for about a year (military) and i comletely stopped. picked it up again a few weeks ago. made another sheath. then havent messed with it since. but the urge is there. and i have a lot more free time now. some background. im from tennessee, currently in south carolina, im a Marine. and im pretty good with my hands (even if they shake a little for a young guy) and thats about it. so hey everybody. any tips on where to start would be appreciated. ive got pretty basic tool setup. i had one of the tandy leather kits, and ive bought some extra tools and whatnot. still dont have much though

TinkerTailor Report post Posted November 3, 2016 Pick something you want to make and make it. Bang some dents in some leather and post pics. Have a look through the tandy library. Kits and step by step instructions will help you progress faster in the beginning.
Jnorma Report post Posted November 4, 2016 okay. so this weekend sometime i want to do an official caqrving. something simple as a first time. but i cant find anything online that isnt bought. maybe imm just looking in the wrong places? also. i want to make a photo album for christmas. the ol lady has one thats in pretty rough shape. i dont know if i should just take a basic one and make a cover, or if i should make one from scratch. i have these little boards to use a backing i guess itd be considered. but havent fully figured out how to do the actual album part. i havent went out looking around yet either so i could find some way to do it. any tips would be appreciated, though :D side note. im pretty bad with technology. so when i start uploading pictures and whatnot dont be surprised if they look like i took them with a potato. Welcome! And thank you for serving our country! OK, for free images, black and white go to the Dover site and see if you can still sign up for free images in your email box. Also know that they have a LOT of books that are full of royalty free clipart on various topics. Some are simple and some are more detailed. They used to allow you to browse through the different topics and they would offer free images! Some of them are so cool! http://store.doverpublications.com/by-subject-art.html?gclid=CKWezJSwpdACFdgGgQodnuMEUA As for the Album, you can get the three ring binder spine with the clips to go through the holes, then all you'd have to do is attach the spine and covers and add your pages. Like this 3 Ring Binder Mechanism: https://www.etsy.com/listing/476702467/one-3-ring-binding-mechanism-aluminum?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=3 ring binder mechanism&ref=sr_gallery_3 I hope you have fun!
