wlg190861 Report post Posted November 26, 2016 (edited) I seen this valet tray an I would like to try an make one. How do you make them any tips. Also I've seen them with snaps. I like this one. How do you make them with no snaps ? Will they hold up over time ? If I did want to make one with snaps, What size snap ? Mattsbagger Report post Posted November 26, 2016 Cut a square of leather 2 inches bigger than the size you want. ie 6×6 interior cut 8X8. I like them rough on the out side so I don't glue pieces flesh to flesh. I use 8/9 leather. Stain and let dry well. 2 days if dip dyeing is what I do. Dip in warm water for 5 to 10 seconds. Pinch the corners together. I use binder clips to hold for a bit and let dry. Finish with your top coat of choice. Will be stiff and hold its shape like a wet formed holster. HavenHillJay Report post Posted November 27, 2016 I've seen these done with Chicago Screws too.
Mattsbagger Report post Posted November 27, 2016 Also. Only leave the clips on the corners long enough to form it or the will mark the cornerns. If you want smooth on both sides glue to 3/4 pieces flesh to flesh. The ones with screws, snaps, rivets or whatever you want are generally not formed and held in shape by them. For being able to lay them flat as "travel" valets.
billybopp Report post Posted November 27, 2016 Binder clips really do make great (and CHEAP) clips for leather work. They do however mark the leather and can rust and leave rust marks if you're not careful. I glued on some little pieces of leather to help mitigate both of those situations. I also have a bunch of inexpensive plastic clamps in various sizes, made mostly for woodworking, also with little bits of leather glued on to prevent marking. OLDNSLOW Report post Posted November 27, 2016 What I did with mine was to get some round stock of oak at Lowes and inserted those in to the holes, not so much to hold the sides together but for a different look from screws, rivets, or snaps. I used some leather dye on the wooden dowels wax them up a little and pushed them in the hole's.
