Old Leather Chairs + couchs - What would you make from the leather?

Recommended Posts

Hi

has anyone used used old leather from "Free" old chairs and couches ?

Just seems like they are pretty large pieces to practice with and its FREE,

I also see a lot of old leather jackets and coats for a dollar or 2 at flea markets but have no idea what to do with them :)

Years ago my friend in Europe would buy full length leather coats and shorten them up for Motorcycle jackets , interesting

Anyway if you have done anything I would love to see what you made

Thanks

I haven't done it myself. But I'm sure you can make most any soft items from them. I believe upholstery and garment leather are the same.

Some day my sectional will see new life under my knife.

A lot of upholstery leather these days is bicast which is marketing for bonded plastic leather. Also some upholstery leather may be treated with scotch guard or something which is no fun on skin

Oh, totally. Just a caution for future readers to watch out for.

Can you tell this  "bicast" leather from the front if looking at a couch  ?

I had a wonderful large couch that a pup of mine ate the underside of the cushion. It was a 3 piece one that curved so no longer could be used that way so I used a box cutter and ripped all the leather off. I've made many things with it, the bottom of a diaper bag, sides and bottom of many bags and I am currently making long straps for leather bags I make. It's nostalgic for me and I just don't tell some of the recipients I think they don't notice and just appreciate the leather. It was a nice black couch with soft leather.
