Members 338uwm Posted January 4, 2009 Members Report Posted January 4, 2009 I've got a design that will need the opening reinforced. Best way I can explain the opening is that instead of just the top being open. I'll be bringing it down half way where the leather would be folded. Like on a cowboy style holster. I'm thinking about going to the local steel shop, and buying some thin stainless tig rods. What would you guys use, and where would you get it. Quote
rhall Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 I've used brass shim stock in Holsters,Sheaths even Specticle cases. It does require that you line the project though, but it makes it practicaly crush proof,Reholstring is a breeze! Quote
rhall Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 Sorry I forgot to say that McMastersCarr in NJ has a great cat. and ship like yesterday!! Quote
Randyc Posted January 4, 2009 Report Posted January 4, 2009 I've only used 6/7 oz. or 8/9 oz. cowhide for my throat reinforcement bands. The weight depends on the weight used for the holster body. I haven't found the need to stitch in metel reinforcement, yet. If a customer asked for a metel reinforced band, I would certainly stitch one in. Randy Quote
Members okie44 Posted January 5, 2009 Members Report Posted January 5, 2009 I have seen several things mentioned, from thin sheet metal, to various kinds of plastic. I have seen commercial speed draw holsters that used what appears to be 1/8" or so piano wire. This spring wire is available at most hardware stores in various sizes. I haven't tried it yet, but have been thinking about it. I think the piano wire might be better than the welding rod. John Quote
Members TexasJack Posted January 5, 2009 Members Report Posted January 5, 2009 Kydex is pretty good stuff. When heated, you can mold it into any shape. You won't have to worry about it corroding like metal and you can make it as wide as you need. Quote
