Members Jaor Posted January 8, 2017 Members Report Posted January 8, 2017 Hi, I'm a beginner. I bought a Natural Vegetable Square Shoulder (8-9 oz), great leather (said a beginner). Have done three belts, fourth and fifth are on the way. But... As I'm learning more and more it seems that this leather is not the perfect one for belts. As far as I understand (and my understanding comes down to reading a simple picture from Al Stohlmans "Belts galore") - best leather part (and direction!) for a belt is from back to shoulder and not from side to side (this is how I cut my belts, as this is the only reasonable length to achieve). So this is probably the reason why one of my belts (the one exposed to biggest tensions due to the fact that it's not a decorative belt, but the one that... well holds my pants) began to curve. But I digress. Having this kind-of-long begining - what can I use this leather for? I thought about making a messangers bag or a case, but as I have checked some designs it's usually 5-7 oz. I'm afraid that this might not be a good idea, especially if it would end up in a waste of leather. So - maybe it's better to leave it and use only some parts (for ex. back of bag or the straps?)? Oh, I almost forgot - yes, I've seen a chart from tandy with statement 8-9oz == belts, holsters, saddle bags. But... I don't even have a knife, so holsters aren't a choice, not to mention a (motor)bike or horse for saddle bags... Thanks and hi! (yes, not "bye", but "hi" as this is my first post). Quote
Members Halitech Posted January 8, 2017 Members Report Posted January 8, 2017 all belts will start to curve and take the natural shape of your body. If you are concerned about it stretching, stitch both edges, it will help control any stretch you can certainly make bags or cases out of it (tough cell phone case anyone?) but it's going to be pretty thick. You could also do bracelets but again, will be thicker then some want. Quote
bikermutt07 Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 Holsters would be my first choice, but I'm not sure after that. Maybe a quiver or slings, or even some of those cool mideval mugs I saw the other day. Guitar straps? Tool pouches? It maybe too heavy for tool pouches, unless you're making the be all end all of framing rigs. And welcome to the forum. Quote
