Timbo Report post Posted January 6, 2009 Just wondering if anyone else has encountered this. I recently got some nice waxed nylon thread for hand stitching, but the problem with it is that when in place and tightened down the white thread is no longer white. It actually looks pretty gray or just off color in general.......but sure not white like my poly is. This is also thru bare leather......no finish or dye whatsoever. Anybody else ever experience this??? Does linen thread to the same??? I have only ever used natural color linen and have no experience with colored linen thread. All help or ideas will be appreciated. Tim
SmokinP Report post Posted January 6, 2009 I have same problem. Seems to be with wax. Running the stitching wheel over the treads seems to help but still looks dingy. Also it seems after time the stitching whitens up a little on it's own but it takes quite a while. There was a topic on this a while back but I think it got lost in the last crash. abn Report post Posted January 6, 2009 Tim, I've used nylon thread exclusively for several years now. I agree with SmokinP's assessment... When tightened down, the nylon and wax seem to combine to make white thread look a little gray. As S.P. mentioned, using an overstitch wheel helps a lot, and the thread will loosen up a bit over time, restoring the true color. Can't comment of the behavior of white linen thread, as I've never used it... -Alex
Shorts Report post Posted January 7, 2009 What are you stitching exactly? I only ask because depending on the project, a good dip in the wet mold water will brighten up the white stitching. On my holsters with white thread, after dipped for wet molding, I run the stitch wheel over the threads again to set them. Then I set the holster to dry. Once dry, I get nice clean thread. Timbo Report post Posted January 7, 2009 I've stitched some small stuff with it so far but am getting ready to start building my first saddle and I for sure need some nice white thread to make the stitching pop. I hate to get started with it and be disappointed with the results and have to pull them out and redo them. Thanks for all the suggestions I'll give them all a try.
