Members Narnian Posted April 7, 2017 Members Report Posted April 7, 2017 I received an order of Hermann Oak recently, but it seems pretty stiff for 5-6 oz. leather and the flesh side is like fine-grit sandpaper (instead of shaggy rough). I'm certain I could sand furniture with it. I have limited experience with leather, though, and this is the first time I've ordered veg tan, so I am wondering whether it is normal or if I got a less than stellar piece. I've put some mink oil paste on a couple of small swatches, but the jury is still out as to whether it will soften it much. Advice? Quote
Members nrk Posted April 7, 2017 Members Report Posted April 7, 2017 well, show the pics, and let's see where did you ordered from? any specification/details/description of type this leather is from seller? more details pls Quote
Members Weaver Leather Supply Posted May 1, 2017 Members Report Posted May 1, 2017 Hermann Oak natural veg will be fairly firm. The back sounds like a typical dry-split piece of leather. Shaggyness is normally loose flesh which is also not desirable in a good piece of leather. What are you planning to make with it? If you are going to be doing any tooling or carving you want that firmness to accept nice crisp stamping. The finished piece will soften up some if you oil it and with use. Quote
