Members Windrider30 Posted April 8, 2017 Members Report Posted April 8, 2017 Which leather is better for them rawhide latago or kangaroo? I am in Australia so roo hide is rather cheap i mean i can get 350 feet of 1/8th lace for about 110 bucks which includes shipping. I am on a braiding kick of late lol. Quote
Members Stetson912 Posted April 8, 2017 Members Report Posted April 8, 2017 I think rawhide is traditional. At least in the states. Don't quote me on that, but not too many roos hopping around here haha. I have seen latigo reins as well and I imagine they work just fine. I've seen very expensive rawhide reins online, but those were all hand made by very skilled artisans, far more skilled than I could ever imagine. Upwards of $800 for some of the romels I saw. I would think that you could do much finer work with rawhide than latigo, but latigo may be easier to use. However, I see no reason why you couldn't or shouldn't use kangaroo. It's cheap and widely available for you, it's very strong, and it's practically meant to be braided. I say give it a go. Quote
Moderator bruce johnson Posted April 8, 2017 Moderator Report Posted April 8, 2017 I've used both and they each have their place. A really nice set of kangaroo reins can have a ton of feel. Rawhide is pretty durable and forgiving.
