Paul Long Sheathmaker Tutorial

Recommended Posts

Folks,

As some of you may know I make knives and also do leather work.   The reason I started leather was to make sheaths for the knives.   Since then leather has taken over somewhat but that is another matter.

Anyway.   I decided today to purchase the pouch sheath making tutorial by Paul Long.   You can find it on Chris Crawford knife site and if I understand correct Chris is the one who made the video.  Anyway what a great informative video, I picked up a lot of things that I am looking forward to trying.  There are three other videos as well.  There are lots of tutorials out there and I know many free ones on you tube.  But to me this one was well worth the price and I have little doubt will improve my sheaths in the future.  I have no ties to Paul or Chris and I think Paul is on this forum.  But Just felt I should share for anyone out there considering sheaths and this video...just do it

There are definitely some videos worth buying out there.

If I was shooting to make this a business I would spend the money on some videos. But staying strictly hobby based, they are beyond reasonable expense.

If I was going to venture into boot making, I wouldn't hesitate to buy Lisa Sorrel's videos.

I would challenge that notion Mutt.   For the sake of $37(streaming ...little more if you want a cd)   You get access to Years of knowledge in this case for making sheaths.  We all routinely spend $$$ on tools that may or may not work out.   While I have progress from hobby into more of a business, I wish I had  viewed this years ago.   Not saying its right for everyone or that you should run out and buy it.  But worth looking at what is out there for sure.  Even as a hobby we all are on here sharing knowledge and trying to improve.    Just food for thought

Ok folks I spent some time today and followed Pauls video to make this sheath.   Quite an experience and Like always there is more work to be done.   Please forgive the rivet in the sheath, that is due to my screw up when I was sewing.  I was using a needle awl machine and made an error and that was a solution.  I doubt I will sell this sheath with the knife, but wanted to finish regardless.   The knife on the right is the original veg tan wet molded sheath I made.  The one on the left is following the tutorial.  I learned a lot doing this and  I really like the way the liner holds the knife in the sheath.   No wet molding.    I need to consider how much pressure the needle awl machine put on the sheath. Seemed a bit much. In this case I needed to be a little larger on the right side going up to where that rivet is, my fault for getting two small and I sewed too close to the edge.  I will fix that in the future.

I am really trying to improve my sheath game so I can start to offer my services to knifemakers as another revenue stream.

Have a great New year everyone

Big improvement.

I didn't know his stuff was available for streaming. His video series used to be up there with Lisa's price range, if I remember correctly.

On the Chris Crawford website you can buy the DVD or stream it for a few bucks less,   You always have access to it by logging into the site once you purchase it is how I understand it.  Regardless, I found it useful.

I have a ton of mistakes on that one...but I learned and that is what counts

Well, Lisa's DVD is still 850.00. But it is 8 DVDs and a book.

I was hoping for an option for streaming.

Well, for 4,750.00 you get the DVDs, the book, a pair of custom lasts for your feet, and a two week training course where you make your own boots.

That is pretty cool. But you better pack a lunch, because Lisa is not providing it.

To be serious for a moment, I really do think this offer is a good deal. She is able to charge $5,000.00 for a pair of her boots. That's the minimum.

To have her teach in a class of no more than two students, that would be a real treat. I can't afford it. But I totally see the value in it.

Yep if it teaches you a skill and you get a pair of boots out of it...I can see the appeal if that is a way you want to go.  There are a lot of courses out there, bamboo fly rods windsor chairs etc.......some folks do them instead of say a vacation on the beach
