How is this Technique Done?

I have never seen leatherwork like this anywhere else...Can anyone give me some insight on the technique used. Thanks

Just a guess here. But certainly the base is layered and I'd say that the design is "Stacked" each piece against each other to fill out the design. Very cool looking however it was done

Here are some more...the lampworked glass marbles are also quite breathtaking. Both extremely talented artists. Like I said thought I have never seen any leather work like this and I figured it was probably layers as kiwican mentioned..Do you think they are just glued together then?

EDIT: I found his work on instagram and in one of the pictures it showed him carving the grateful dead skull. Question semi answered then. LOL!

Yep, looks like just laminated layers of leather - much like plywood.

There is a DVD on leather jewelry by Rene Berends that uses this technique.  I posted a link to it below.  It basically involves gluing different leathers together and then cutting at an angle to get the different "plies" to show.  The angle of the cut and the thicknesses of the individual layers gives a different effect.  When I attended his class (years ago), we used different colors to make a simulated gemstone.  In one of your pictures it appears all the layers were made of the same leather.  Good luck!
