Members ComputerDoctor Posted June 4, 2018 Members Report Posted June 4, 2018 Customer loves green so it will get progressive coats. I'm going to use an 'Alligator pattern' skin for the cover flap and other pieces. Sam:) Quote

Members JMixx Posted June 5, 2018 Members Report Posted June 5, 2018 Great color! And that looks like *really* heavyweight leather. What weight is it? Quote

I have no idea! I just visit Tandy, look for bargains and restock:) It is thick though, maybe 3/16 but very soft and quality feeling. I still don't understand all of this "ounce" stuff---tell me how big the sample is when they weigh it and say---3 OZ or 9 OZ??? Even the sales people at Tandy had no idea:) Sam Quote

Members blue duck Posted June 5, 2018 Members Report Posted June 5, 2018 Actually Sam, the ounce measurement does not (well maybe it used to) apply to the actual weight. It is a measurement of the leather thickness. The folks at Tandy really should be able to answer your questions, but that is another thread. Most online leather stores will have this information for you, maybe in FAQs or help. You will find some use more accurate measuring and some will round. Here is an example: 1 ounce = 1/64" = .016" = .41mm 3 ounce = 3/64" = .047" = 1.19mm 12 ounce = 3/16" = .188" = 4.78mm Hope that helps. Quote

Members JMixx Posted June 6, 2018 Members Report Posted June 6, 2018 Thank you all for those references!! I have been trying to get a "feel" for what thickness is how many ounces, just by handling the stock at my LLS (local leather shop), which thus far has been *way* too much information for my little brain to hold (on top of work stuff, pet stuff, to do lists, etc, etc).VERY much easier to have a chart, and try to remember that the "weight" in ounces correlates with the number of 64ths of an inch in thickness. Thanks again! Jennifer Quote
Contributing Member LatigoAmigo Posted June 6, 2018 Contributing Member Report Posted June 6, 2018 (edited) The only way to really know the thickness is by using a gauge designed to provide you with that information, typically in ounces and millimeters. Edited June 6, 2018 by LatigoAmigo Quote
Members ComputerDoctor Posted June 7, 2018 Author Members Report Posted June 7, 2018 I want to thank all of you that helped clear up this 'ounce' thing! I love the charts. I have several dial gauges used in reloading so I'll take a look:) Sam Quote

Members Sheilajeanne Posted June 7, 2018 Members Report Posted June 7, 2018 (edited) I needed a specific weight of leather for a project, and the young guy at Tandy's who was helping me pulled out a leather thickness gauge, and made sure I got what I was looking for! NO EXCUSE for not being able to give a customer that information!! And a gauge can be a lot simpler and a lot cheaper than the one shown above! https://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/leather-thickness-gauge C.D., that green alligator print looks really cool! Can't wait to see the finished briefcase! Edited June 7, 2018 by Sheilajeanne Quote
