ShaneBlacksmith Report post Posted November 5, 2018 I have several panels of leather that i'm putting on a trunk I built. It was modeled after an old Saratoga trunk for women. The original trick had thin embossed sheet metal on it so I instead made it with embossed leather. The leather is too thick around its boarders to fit under the other parts. (3-4oz) how can I shave the leather down evenly around the edges with a 1" boarder? I appreciate any ideas
rodneywt1180b Report post Posted November 5, 2018 Welcome aboard. The term for what you want to do is "skive" or "skiving" There are several different ways and tools for skiving leather. This is what I use. I'm still a beginner and have found it simple to use and sufficient for my needs. https://www.springfieldleather.com/Beveler-Safety
Bob Blea Report post Posted November 5, 2018 Welcome to the forum! There are several types of knives that can do this kind of job including round knives and special skiving knives. The one that Rodney mentioned above is probably one of the safer ones to use. Two things to keep in mind 1) whatever you use needs to be extremely sharp to work properly and 2) always make sure your fingers are never in front of the blade. It's really easy for the knife to slip when doing this kind of work and if its sharp enough to skive leather it will certainly cut into your hand.
