Making Dragons

Recommended Posts

Hey all! I was inspired to try this after flipping through Clay B.'s albums (awesome work in there btw). This is a dragon cut out just his head and partial wing. Now I am working on musculature and details...he's not done yet. He's maybe 10-12 inches tall total.

That looks real good TC, I just love dragons. What weight leather are you using?

Thanks Matthew,

here's another dragon that I did last night...also not done (Yeah I know his arms are messed up...I was tired  ) All inspired by the awesome carving and embossing I'm seeing on this board!

None :) These are free hand drawn directly onto the leather, my own personal style.

This was inspired by something I did????? Well, what you are doing is really neat and it's fun to see the progression. The pattern is great too. Wish I could draw. Thanks for sharing the pictures and I look forward to seeing a lot more.

A couple more dragon projects... The first is again a larger head and neck only dragon. Wing (s) will be added later.

The second is a little brainstorm I had and I will be finishing it tonight and seeing what people in one of our groups think about it tomorrow... It is teeny tiny. Maybe 2 inches long. The cap rivet is a medium size to show how small this dragon is. I am tooling him with a small modeling spoon and point end tool. He will have wings added after he is painted. Then he will be hung from a pin and have a jewel in the curl of his tail...

How fun! I am looking forward to seeing pix of the completed piece. Please don't forget to post them!

MatthewD asked about patterns. YOU obviously don't need this resource, but I can recommend

GREAT BOOK OF DRAGON PATTERNS by Lora S. Irish

It is a lovely book with 31 patterns in it. The copyright on pattern use is tolerable as she allows 3 pattern copies for personal use and unlimited completed projects. (I HATE those pattern books that put in the fine print that you can only make 1 project for yourself. Why buy the book? But that's another rant!)

Anyway, GREAT BOOK OF DRAGON PATTERNS is available at Amazon.com. **IF** you click through to Amazon by going through this link FIRST

http://www.disaster-area.org/

a portion of your purchase goes to a College Scholarship Fund in honor of a dear friend who died in a car wreck a few years ago.

I've been considering these two books, but haven't purchased yet:

Dragons: A Book of Designs (Dover Pictorial Archive Series) by Marty Noble

Dragonart: How to Draw Fantastic Dragons and Fantasy Creatures by J. "NeonDragon" Peffer & Jessica Peffer

These are also available at Amazon.com.
