Hi everyone. I  am greener than green in leather work. Have been learning from Ian Atkinson and Nigel Armitage on YouTube. I  purchased Nigel's pouch pack and have been struggling trying to find the leather he recommends which is 4 to 5 oz dyed shoulder. Everyone seems to be out of stock.

My question is can I just purchase veg tanned shoulder and dye the leather before assembly?

Montana leather seems to have good prices. Would you recommend them?

Thanks for the help. Excited to get started.

Absolutely you can. Have at it and have some fun.

I'm not paying 80 bucks for a belt!!! It's a strip of leather. How hard could it be? 4 years and 3 grand later.... I have a belt I can finally live with.

Stitching is like gravy, it's only great if you make it every day.

From Texas but in Bossier City, Louisiana.

Thanks very much. Probably a stupid question, but just needed confirmation!

Not a stupid question at all, since you don't want to spend money on the wrong kind of leather!
You also might contact Brettun's Village, up in Maine, to see if they have the dyed veg-tan you need: <https://www.brettunsvillage.com/leather/
I don't work for them (wrong coast!), but they always have a wide variety of leather types and weights, and they might have yours available. Prices and service are fine, too.

There ae no dumb questions here. This place is frequented by many many real professionals who are happy to help.

This isn't the kind of place where people get snobby. Just lots of fine folks willing to share information to keep this craft alive.

They have helped me immensely over my five years of playing with leather.

Ask when you need help.
