Members Woldbill1962 Posted August 31, 2019 Members Report Posted August 31, 2019 While waiting for my tool order to come in, I figured I would spend some time practicing with a swivel knife a buddy gave me. So went by hobby lobby, picked up some leather. Put a good edge on the knife and see what happens. After about two hour s of lines, circles, waves ect I started thinking...... how the heck do these guys do this and make it look so good and easy........... Got alot of practicing to do..lol Then I noticed alot of marks on my leather where I was working the knife. Kinda half moon looking. Then I realized it was from the nail on my right pinky finger. It's not long, just enough to leave a mark. Gotta remember this in the future....trim trim trim. Dont want this to happen on a nice project I'm working on. Back to practice...have a great weekend everyone Bill Quote
wizard of tragacanth Posted August 31, 2019 Report Posted August 31, 2019 Oh yes, this is one of the first lessons in leather craft. I remember someone saying that you should clip your nails the day before you start the project. File them and knock off the edges. They will also wear down a little over the next 24 hours just from handling things. However, the lesson is... be very conscious of your finger tips. It took me several projects, making holsters, before it became natural. My first few holsters had marks all over them, but a little less each time. Usually got them when wet forming. Now, I don't have any nail marks. Haven't had any for a long time, and never even have to think about it when working. Making holsters is a little different than making a belt or a coaster, at least the way that I make them. I never use a pony, so I am constantly handling the holster and turning it around. After the finger nail lesson, I learned that one must be careful not to lay the "good" side down on the cutting board because scars in the board from cutting can mark the leather. nick Quote
Members SilverForgeStudio Posted August 31, 2019 Members Report Posted August 31, 2019 Bill- a band-aid over the pinky prior to starting will prevent the nasties and scuff marks- as well provides a measure of protection for your skin if you are going to be using the swivel much. I use Coban tape. Quote
