Members SlamDunc Posted August 24, 2007 Members Report Posted August 24, 2007 Hey everyone, I am new to the board and I have to admit I have been lurking for about a month. I just picked up leathercraft with the intention of making motorcycle seats, I have finished my first and while it is a nice seat (pics soon) What the seat ultimately was; was a huge learning experience! Between David and Beeza I figured out most of the process the only thing I would like to improve is my patterns. I am making seats for honda cruisers (VTX 1300R) for myself and a buddy. Okay, so heres my question how do you guys go about making a seat pattern? Any help would be cool. I am in awe of your work, Dunc Quote
Moderator Johanna Posted August 24, 2007 Moderator Report Posted August 24, 2007 Welcome to leatherworker.net. Hi, Dunc! Are we already acquainted? (J?) Sweet bike! Holler if you have any good ideas or problems. Johanna Quote
Ambassador abn Posted August 24, 2007 Ambassador Report Posted August 24, 2007 Dunc, welcome to the forums! Glad to have you here. There are a couple of motorcycle seat experts here, and a few folks like yourself who are just starting to build 'em. Lots of good knowledge being exchanged. I'd love to see some pics of your first seat when you get around to posting them. I can't answer your question about patterns since I don't make this kind of stuff -- just wanted to welcome you and give you kudos on a sweet bike. Regards, -Alex Quote

Okay, so heres my question how do you guys go about making a seat pattern? Any help would be cool. I am in awe of your work, Dunc Dunc, I make my patterns out of duct tape. I apply the tape to cover the entire pan then I add 3/8" to the tape pattern all the way around. Of course I construct my seats dry as opposed to the wet method that Beeza uses. The duct tape method will work for Beeza's method too. His seat top is cut to the size of the padding right where the padding curves down and becomes the side rather than the top. Check out the wet molding thread that Beeza did a few weeks back....or mine on the Jesus seat day by day. Good luck and post some pics Dave Quote
