Contact adhesive

Recommended Posts

Hello.

I bought a tin of Bison Kit contact adhesive which I have used when making moccasins. Unfortunately, when they get wet the adhesive fails and parts separate. Having just looked on the manufacturer's website, this limitation is noted.

Can anyone recommend an alternative contact adhesive that does not have this limitation?

Thanks.

Scott

I use this for my saddlery work and most other things works for me. Does say used in the shoe industry.

Give Abbey a ring ask if it would work for you.

Hope this helps

Thanks jcuk for your input. To clarify, are you referring to Woodweld when you say it is used in the shoe industry or an Abbey England product?

I use evo-stick works well and after 24 hours will not fail, about a £5 a tin

Clear the area to be glued using sandpaper

Spread layer on both sides

When touch dry, put both sides together and using a hammer tap together

Leave for 24 hours to fully set

Thanks for the reply Grumpymann. Have you used Woodweld on footwear that has become sodden during use?

Scott

Thanks chrisash. I will have a look at the EVO-STIK website.

mind out there are two types of Evo; instant and time bond. I've found that the time bond can be affected by water over time and joints separate. If not used properly even the instant type will be affected by water, too much too often and joints will separate. After gluing up, the edge of the glued section needs a good sealing with beeswax to prevent ingress of water into the leather. If water gets to that leather, it loosens the fibres and they can pull away.
