Members Scootman Posted December 30, 2020 Members Report Posted December 30, 2020 Hi all, not sure if this is the right spot for this as I am new to this site. I have a Cowboy 4500 that sews great and I noticed a while back the thread freying slightly as its pulled up from the shuttle area and up through the needle. I have checked all parts for burrs and have buffed certain areas so burrs are rulled out. My problem is ive notice the needle binding on the upstroke much like it is struggling to pull thread up through the leather. It makes a crunching/pinching groan on the upstroke and when run at very slow speed it will bind up and Slip at the belt on the motor I think. Has anyone ever experienced this problem or is it normal on this machine? Quote
Contributing Member JLSleather Posted December 31, 2020 Contributing Member Report Posted December 31, 2020 That machine doesn't pull thread "up from the shuttle area through the needle". I assume that first of all you changed the needle? That type of issue likely boogered needle (which I would check first) or very easy could just be something in the top thread path - try cutting off the thread at the spool and rerouting through the tension disks 'n' stuff... could be twisted or a booger between the disks causing that. Change the needle and rethread the top thread would be where i would start.... could very easily get to the bottom of it with no trouble at all. Quote "Observation is 9/10 of the law." Moderator Wizcrafts Posted December 31, 2020 Moderator Report Posted December 31, 2020 Make sure that the two spring loaded screws that hold the shuttle assembly onto the end of the arm have about 1 full turn of slack. If they are tightened all the way down the shuttle can squeeze the needle and thread. You need enough clearance for the thread and needle to go around the shuttle without binding. Those little coil spring on the screws allow it to float a bit. Remove your leather and top thread, then slowly run the machine while watching the needle and shuttle interact. Does the shuttle hook hit the needle, or squeeze it against the shuttle ring? If so, back off the screws another half turn. Check for a bent needle! Next, verify that you are using the proper needle size for the thread combination you're using. Consult this needle and thread chart.
