Rawhide Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Anyone using an Ol' Smoothie? What about the Ol' Smoothie Lite? How do they compare with Bob Beards Swivel Knives? Any other brands that you like? I know this is a big old can of worms, but.... All recommendations, suggestions are welcome. Thanks Marlon
sheathmaker Report post Posted October 9, 2007 I tried the Smith knife , but I own two of Bob Beards knives. Bob's knives are just super smooth and I've used nothing else since I got them about five years ago. Paul
Rawhide Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Thanks Paul. It's good to hear from someone with direct comparison experience. Marlon
sheathmaker Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Rawhide, I still don't have a picture for you but there will be a link at the bottom that takes you to Bob Beard's web site in the swivel knife section. They have gone up quite a bit. Bob will be at the boot and Sdale Maker's roundup in wichita falls this friday and saturday if you are going. http://www.robertbeardtools.com/Knives&...OtherTools.html Paul
Rawhide Report post Posted October 9, 2007 Is he going? I know he's not going to the IFoLG show in Ft worth. I got an email saying he wasn't coming because his father passed away, and it put a lot of paperwork stress, grief, and things on his shoulders. I just assumed he wasn't going to make it there either. Marlon
Regis Report post Posted October 10, 2007 Marlon, Hope you get a chance to try a Henley. I bought thin angle blade from Henley based on similar thread early this year. I just can't imagine a better blade. If you can try lots of knives. That is best thing. I found that when a knife fits you better, you will cut better . The right fit now keeps me from tilting knife to the left. Best of luck finding just the right one. Regis
sheathmaker Report post Posted October 10, 2007 Rawhide, your information on Bob may be much more current and accurate than mine. I was planning on picking up a few tools (stamps) in wichita falls, but may not be able to. Paul
ClayB Report post Posted October 10, 2007 Last I heard, Bob is NOT going to be at Wichita Falls or Fort Worth.
Mike Report post Posted October 23, 2007 I have 2 Chuck Smith knives and various Tandy (pre-TLF) knives, Beard, Henley, ceramic and steel blades. The Ol' Smoothie works just fine as does the Tandy Craftool Pro-Line. All of these knives are extremely smooth. Beard also makes wonderful tools. I use a Henley blade on thin leather. I use 1/4" regular blades on thicker leather. I also have a Sheridan blade that I think I got from Robert Beard. Just keep the blade polished and adjust the length of the knife to your hand and you should be set. Unless I'm working on something real thin or detailed, it really doesn't matter which knife I use.
