Firefighter Suspenders

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I previously made a set of firefighting suspenders out of two pieces of 5oz leather, 1 3/4” wide, glued and sewn together.  The design, fit and appearance turned out really well, but they are pretty stiff and haven’t loosened up much. They still feel a little bulky.
I am thinking of making another set using some of the English bridle 1 1/2” belt blanks with only one ply, so there won’t be a backing piece.  I am still wanting the look of a hefty, quality set of suspenders, but with more comfort.
I am wondering since I’m using only a single ply, will the straps be too flimsy and curl at the ends with some use?  If I stitch them will it solve a curling issue?  Will the English bridle bleed onto clothes when it gets wet from sweat with no backing?
Any advice or suggestions is appreciated, and thank you all in advance for your help!

I made a similar rig for a fellow a few months back.

He needed leather as the cheap nylon ones were wearing out too fast . . . also needed a box on the right side for tablet and cell phone . . . put his name on it . . . pockets inside.

I wore it around for a while . . . it was pretty comfortable  . . . both fronts and all straps were cut from 6-7 oz veg tan.

May God bless,

Dwight
