Next Project - Lion Armor!

Alright, so now I'm working on some lion armor. Should be on about the same level as the dragon armor. Depending on preference I think some people will like this armor a lot more. Anyway, here are parts of the matched pauldrons for the armor. If you don't know where they go on the armor you can wait and see or look up the sketch in my DA gallery Azmal.DeviantArt.com

What would this be called? Its not really pictoral carving is it? If anyone is willing, I would like some tips on how to improve my carving and tooling. I haven't done much other tooling aside from the big eagle crest and a couple simple family crests so I could use some tips. I'm quite happy with them, but I know theres much room for improvement for future works.

But I tell you, I just loved the dragon armor. Not only was it really "fantasy" but the coloring was absolute superb. Looking forward to see this armor when it's done:-)

Hi Azmal,

I think your carving looks good and I like the color. As for what to call it, Paul Burnett it doing a series of leather carving lesson he call Victorian Style and I think that's probably where this would fit in (if it needs a label) With that kind of a pattern, I am not sure what more you can do to it unless you want to emboss it or add hair, but you probably don't. The only suggestion I woud make it to spend a little more time cleaning things up with a modeling tool. Make sure all the edges are rounded over and all the bevel marks are smooth. You can do a lot of little finesse things with the modeler that will make your carvings look more finished (even though most people will probably never notice them)

Your work is always amazing!! Can't wait to see this one finished.

Hi Azmal,

I think your work is excellent and really has inspired me to get moving into this hobby. I know that someday I would like to be able to create armor, but that is a long way away I think. One question I have is just the type and size of leather you typically work with. Being a leather newbie, I am more curious than anything else for now. I have read 10-12oz is a typical thickness from another post on this site, but did not see anything about the type of leather to use or treatments done. There is just so much info out there it is a bit overwhelming still.

Strange lol does it it really look red? It's dark orange in person and I think it looks about the same on my comp at least lol

I use 10oz usually. Its better to start from the ground up I think. I kind of jumped into the middle of and started making armor and I still dont know common leather working terms and I'm kind of missing a foundation that I think would be helpful to me now.

Love your fantasy armor on Deviant. It is some of the best I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot and made a lot. Great use of texture and color. I think your tooling skills are quite adequate for "blinging" out your armor. It looks to me like you're an armor-artist before a leather-artist, so that's where your focus should go.

On the Lion armor ~ as mentioned above, most people won't notice the little differences on your tooling. Can't wait to see your sketch come to life. Keep up the amazing work ~ you rock!
