Heavy Duty Sewing Machine For Leather

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone; After nearly forty years of sewing everything by hand, my old hands need a machine. Perhaps it's just an excuse and maybe I'm getting lazy but I still want one anyway. I have an opportunity to pick up a used Singer Sewing Machine Model 211G166 and was wondering if it will be suitable for sewing two pieces of 8 to 9 ounce tooling leather. Thank you for any help. I personally don't think it would be the right machine for your sewing, it is a high speed machine that would require a new servo motor and a speed reducer to sew leather, that would be about another $300.00 US. I found and old topic about the 211g166.

I would buy either the Cobra 4 or 3. The 3 is OK for holsters, but the 4 is better for gunbelts and wider welts as well. Techsew is local and they have a new machine worth buying, but the Cobra was a better deal or no worse, and they probably have their head more in holsters. I'm in Toronto, and have been through the second hand machines, overall not worth the effort. There are some catagories where they shine like small machines that cost about 60 bucks are built like tanks and work great for ever. But the heavy sewers I haven't come across the holster machines. You look at Bianchi before the current upswing in interest, and the machines were custom or needle awl. I tihnk one is unlikely to find something that fits from the second hand market in Ontario, unless you want a needle awl machine.

One of the most difficult aspects of selling machines is to get people to really define what they want to do. You want a heavy stitcher? How about this lovely Puritan OSXL?

First of all I'd like to say thank you to all the kind and informative responses to my (which machine) issue I was having.

To make a long story, and this post short, I can tell you that I just got done speaking with Mr. Dave Spiegel at Leather Machine Co. Inc. and I now have a brand new Cobra Class 4 machine on it's way from California to Ontario as I write this.

Thanks again for all your help friends.

Bud

Thank you, and from what I've heard from other Cobra owners it's a great machine.

Thanks again, and I appreciate the reply.
