Hello! This is only one example but, for example, I can see how I can take a modern, cheap F918 stamp (a figure-carving stamp like a camouflage) and modify it to be more like a vintage one if I had a very thin file (and maybe my slow speed grinder, too). I could sharpen the ends of the little metal lines (and maybe round the end over a bit more with the grinder). What kind of files do you/they use to tweak thin lines on stamps? I heard that even Barry King "used his coarsest checkering file" to customize a special order, vertical lined thumbprint for a guy. I wonder what a checkering file is like... like if it's made for the purpose(?). At first I kicked my…

It has been mentioned on the forum a few times but not as a stand alone discussion topic I can find. A friend and I were talking about this a few days ago. There was a somewhat standard back in the day shared with us by older guys who stamped production work for large shops. After looking a bunch of the older work from saddles to wallets, it generally runs true. It makes for a pleasing visual outcome. Basket stamping - The width of the border stamp should be the width of the end of the basket stamp. Geometric stamping - The width of the border stamp should be half the length of one side of the stamp impression. Two impressions per side. Larger bord…

Hello all-hopefully the title above explains the jist of it, I am looking for help in finding the best hand-held alphabet stamping tool and set for customizing goods at craft shows. Ideally it would be a self-enclosed system where you load the letters in and simply pound once (vs the classic sets where you are placing and pounding each individual letter) Any help and/or recommendations would be stellar!

Brass letters are at the heart of hot foil stamping. But how do you choose the right font and size for your project? Whether you're stamping on leather, paper, or packaging, the right typography makes all the difference. In this guide, we’ll walk you through key considerations to help you choose the perfect brass type for your needs. 1. Why Font and Size Matter in Foil Stamping Choosing the right brass font and size isn’t just about style — it affects legibility, impression quality, and your brand image. Since foil stamping involves high heat and pressure, fonts that are too thin, intricate, or small may appear faint or blurred. Conversely, fonts that are t…

I had a stamp that I was having a hard time identifying. Originally, I thought it was an R244 ... but it is a B244. A round, smooth-faced beveling tool. I'm having trouble understanding why I couldn't just use a regular (rectangular-ish) bevel. To save someone having to look the tool up, here's a link: https://proleathercarvers.com/products/smooth-round-beveler-set

I know this has been asked thousands of times, but bear with me. I recently bought a very large undyed unfinished double butt piece of leather from Tandy. I usually work with pre-dyed, prefinished leathers, but I figured I’d take a risk and learn how to die and finish leather myself. However, an unexpected issue that has risen is that before I can even get to finishing/dying, mildew/mold begins to form on the belt on both sides, very soon after I finish stamping a design(I’m talking under an hour). What on earth do I do to make sure this doesn’t happen? This also happened with the same leather when I attempted to wet form leather around an AirPods case and when I clamped …
