I saw this saddle on Ebay and was kinda blown away by it. I can't imagine how they did it, unless the swell piece is actually several pieces nailed on separately. The horn looks to be simply plated and engraved. Any silver experts care to comment? Just curious, as I have no intention of trying any of this.

What could possibly cause a saddle to list, (sit crooked), to one side or the other, barring the obvious, i.e. stirrup leathers? Now, I can't believe a reputable saddlemaker would build a saddle on an obviously crooked tree, so let's rule that one out for sake of this discussion. What else could cause it? Let's assume the rider is very experienced and knows a good seat from one that is not right. I'm thinking the groundseat is a bit uneven.

It's confirmed! We will be presenting a couple of seminars at the Rocky Mountain Leather Trade Show at Sheridan on Thursday May 19th. The topic is Saddle Trees from a Tree Maker's Perspective. We will be talking about the top side in the morning session, including measurements, what you can measure and what you can't but is still important, what some measurements actually mean and don't mean, what factors affect the way different parts of a tree end up looking and why - basically information to help you get the look you want and the fit for the rider you need. The afternoon session will be on the bottom side - factors that affect fit for the horse, why and how, what t…

New on to the site, sorry if this is well dressed previously in earlier strings. I used Farrow buckles recently when doing a custom job for someone who waned leathers not as wide to allow using standard size Blevins buckles. Now some folks have seen this option when coming in to work out a saddle plan with me and some are liking the option. So would love to know who likes them for what type of use. Again, my first run with Farorw buckles was great, but it was used accommodating a very much lighter saddle, tiny rider , lighter type of horse and Farrow buckles gave me some flexibility for that occasion.

Hey folks, I have been thinking about something like a Police saddle for my BFB mare. That is text brevity for Big Fat Belgian. I was thinking about the kind that the Manhatten Mounted Police use, since they seem to ride Belgians a bit, albeit less round ones. This could make getting the right size, less of an issue. She is actually looking pretty good at the moment, after a long winter on hay. She could use some miles though, and so could I. I would love a custom Wade, but it is so not in my price range at the moment. Does anyone have any suggestions, leads on good used gear and who makes this type of saddle? I would be intersted in other suggested types as w…

OK, . . . to most of you all here, . . . no biggie, . . . but I finally got to break the ice. Fixed some other things here and there, . . . but never got to do the machine sew until this little lady brought her Billy Cook barrel racer in for some work. Her stirrups were tight, . . . one stirrup leather needed replaced, . . . whole thing needed a bath and oil, . . . had to make a special pair of hobble straps for her saddle, . . . did all that and gave it a good layer of Bag Kote, . . . shined up like bald headed deacon on Sunday. Thanks to some on line help here, . . . she walked in, . . . took one look, . . . did the Ooooh, . . . Aaaahhhh thing, . . . all is good. …

This topic has been discussed a bit before, but specifics haven't been given. When a saddle is new, the shearling will make the saddle ride a bit higher till it gets packed down a bit. How many hours riding time do you experienced saddle makers think it takes to get the saddle to sit down on the back the way it will be long term?
