immiketoo Report post Posted October 2, 2012 Whilst looking for a suitable granite work surface, I tried local granite counter top places, grave stone places and big box counter top stores to no avail. Nobody had the size or thickness I wanted. They could laminate two pieces for several hundred dollars or do marble for 450! No thank you. After searching the forum for a while I learned about surface plates. After a quick search I located Shars Tool Company on ebay where I found a 12 x 18 surface plate for 39 dollars. Its three inches thick, smooth without being slippery and it is FAR superior to the 1.5 inch granite slabs. Better tool impressions and much quieter to do the work, plus it doubles as a cutting surface! I couldn't be happier! www.shars.com Enjoy :D
