How thick of leather were you stitching? Sounds like you may have a little raw hide in the middle of your leather, if it was a thicker leather.

I have used the 12/13oz bridle leather and it worked out great.

one is the 215 and the other is just called pear shader.

Try weaver supply. They have the rounded shape you are looking for.

1 3/4" is a good size as for the punch try master tool, or c.s. osborn brands. I bought my osborn punch through weaver supply.

You might take a look at weaver leather's rivets i have had great success with them.
