  2. Ok well,..after setting the stirrups,..everything laid up nice and in place,....I didnt attach in any way,..but they stay up against the fender anyhow. Thanks
  3. I sorta saw this in a previous saddle,...not bad,..but bad enough to make me pop a copper rivet from the stirrup leather to the fender to calm it down. Whats wrong with putting a rivet in there? Or cementing? Or a lace or two( maybe with a bleed knot concho,....on this saddle it would be ok,.....but I coulod see problems when I wanted a clean/ clear fender,..plain,..etcYea my lengths are all good,.....thats not my concern,...its just the stirrup leather coming away from the fender that worries me,..and how to address that. When you say trun away,..you mean bend backwards? Should I maybe wet it,..or oil it for this?
  4. Well, these are laced,...but I was just concerned about how the stirrup leathers might seperate,..or pull away from the fender......but I guess its really a moot point once everything is hanging down, and assembled,....maybe I'm overthinking it,...Thanks.
  5. I am going to prestretch the stirrup leathers,...but I'm wondering how attaching these two pieces would affect stretch over time? Dunno? Stohlman on mentions glueing the bottom 6" of the fold,.....I planned to stitch all the way up the leg to the fender being the fender has a stitched edge,.....so why not glue too???
  6. Hey guys, I couldn't really find the answer in the Stohlman Encyclopedia when I looked for it,... Where the Stirrup leathers cross the backside of the fenders,....should I glue that full length? Or glue and sew just the bottom portion where the fold occurs,.....It's rivetted at the top,..,..but between the top,..and the bottom of the fender,..should I leave the fender and stirrup leather unattached,...or cement them together? Book seem to be unclear on this???? This is only my third saddle,,...and I think I glued them on the other two,....but wonder if I was screwing up on that??

    Shiny Finish?

and you cant get a shine with atom wax???????
  8. Thanks,..I sorta had a major screw up,.my daughter and grand-daughter were in the shop ,..and I cut the seat too short,...it was going to have a cheyenne roll,...but not anymore,...itll just be a regular cantle binding,..lol
  9. well,..theres actually some mock up parts on there,..that front is going to be a cinch holder and the back is gonna have a latigo holder,... my daughter ( not the grand) attemted making a latigo holder but cut it too narrow,..lol,...so I put it on there for now anyways.....lol
  10. I had not yet braided the rear jocks yet in this pic...not to mention the lack of cantle binding lol,....its still in progress,...just posting some pics as it goes. got a few things done today , but hand my grand daughter in the shop lol,...so not much progress
  11. How do you get that edge like that?!!? on the skirt,....and everywhere,.....it looks like a welt bead,....how the hell did you do that?
  12. I need a 16" wade...or a trail tree ,..rawhide preferably,..anybody sittin on one they want to part with?
  13. It might not be how everyone does it, it may not be the right way,..but this is how I do it,..and the information on where I learned. Thats some jockeys I just did,.... I learned from this book from my local library. and here's the tutorial... Its called a " One-Thong Type "S" applique and its on page 157 of the book. I realize the ones I did in the pic or off a little,...I did them quick for the purpose of this post,..I'll likely rework them a bit and clean them up.

    Shiny Finish?

I can get anything like glass with Atom wax,..followed by Super Sheen spray.
  15. Yea we've finally reached an understanding lmao...... I do find it takes a certain amount of finesse.....lol,..can't "gorilla" it into doing what you want,...
  16. Damn! That is breathtaking! Your sheridan carvings are masterful!
  17. I thought it was sorta unique with the big horn and all so here's a pic of where I'm at with it,...still have lots to do,..starting fenders today I think and cantle binding....
  18. I went ahead and did these with light skirting and plugged with 2-3 ounce over the shearling,....worked out fine,..all even thickness....without plugging I find they want to curl and I almost HAVE to use the heavy skirting which seems so uch heavier,..and I'm trying to keep the weight down. and NO I havent Laced them yet,..I just have Temporary lacing on them and my jockeys right now,....it takes me forever to lace so I go back and do that afterwards....
  19. OMG this thing is amazing! I'm in Love!!! Nowhere near finished with this saddle,...but I'm just giddy after stitching the seat!!!
  20. I make templates for a sadlle and give to the customer to check fit(posterboard). I have never loaned a saddle out for trial,..just never had to. On price,..I usually have a little wiggle room, so if I can. I knock off a little if it seals the deal.
  21. I love Herman Oak,...I used to use the Tandy Skirting, but after using Herman Oak its hard to go back. i still use the tandy stuff on gunbelts sometimes, but for saddles, its strictly herman oak. The saddle I'm working on right now is "hard". even with oiling prior to dying. I oil, dye,..then use atom wax,..then give a topcoat of leather sheen. It gives a nice flexible finish but it's pretty "hard" . over time is does soften up, but when new,...I have to put mink oil sometimes to get rid of some "rusty hinge" spots. Back on point I go for durabiltiy and and nevermind about how soft the leather is,....I want it strong and resistant...nature will do what it will eventually anyways.
  22. No I hand carve all of it,..dunno where I'd get a stamp this big? lol... with the machine now I'm doing a lot more saddles hopefully,...up til recently it's been hand sewn so I've only done a couple...aside from that my mentor passed away, so I figure a lot out from books, videos, reading everything I can get my hands on....never thought carving was my strong point, but folks seem to buy them anyways so I guess it's ok... I was raised around horses, I have some now,...I still play "cowboy" on a daily basis,...I do more holsters and gunbelts than anything,..mag pouches,..etc...but I do a fair amount of tack and saddlery.
  23. sewed this skirt without a single hiccup I'm so happy!
  24. and plugging....how thick are you fellers using for plugging? I'm using some single shoulders 5-6 oz full length,..is this overkill?
