I want to add something to my last post. ( I had to stop early to see what was disturbing the horses and mules), I think this kind of experimenting is one of the best ways to learn and sharing it is most appreciated. An open mind can lead you down a lot of interesting and productive roads. Sidney Wood

This is essentially back braiding. If you braid even parts with an open lattice down a way you can loop back and go back up with a two pass pattern and have the lower end finished with no ends to cover. Grant shows this in the big book as plate 41. From an other perspective it is an interweave technique. You can do some very pretty two color paterns this way. Sidney Wood

LAPat The templates are a picture of the knot They represent the cylindrical flat braid as being sliced vertically and spread out flat. The knot starts at the right side and wraps in a clockwise direction . when you get to the left side you jump back to the right and continue in the same direction. The knot ends at the left bottom Sidney Wood

L. A. Pat Try taylortel.net/~stwood and look at the first three lessons to get an idea of what a turkshead really is. Then go to the knot gallery there for a knot you want. One of the 5 bight knots will cover a 4 strand round braid. There is an e-mail link on the title page if you have questions. Don't hesitate to ask. Sidney Wood

I realize I am asking the wrong questions above. Actually what I really need to know is what full service hostig consists of . Such things as form processing and traffic statistics etc. php , asp etc. are probably a little deeper than I want to get until I can build a test bed to learn one of them. Sidney Wood

What would I need for server side scripting etc . What cgi are supported? and a ballpark figure for cost . This aspect is new to me and I need a hint as to what direction to take. All the info is available but the choice is hard to make. Sidney Wood

I got first the section on on interweaves (simple pineapple) up on taylortel.net?~stwood a few minutes ago. This is the way I do them but there is a slghtly different approach you can use that will come next. If anybody would rather see a pdf here just ask. Sidney Wood

Jim; Thank you for the kind words (David also). You are right about knot theory involving some heavy math but the one expression from lesson two is all you really need for a simple turkshead ( casa coded ). Done mentally it gives you some idea of what to expect before you start a particular knot. I found it in Tom Hall's book as the basis for an algorithm-diagram which I still have not figured out, but it predicts the first wrap or two of the cylindrical flat braid pattern. Actually you can braid any knot of this kind by a visual inspection as you go. The pinned mandrels help keep things organized and in place so you can concentrate on the braid pattern. The concept of the bight increment is the key to the whole thing and this is obvious from a template of the knot. I have a fourth lesson in the works that will be on the site in a few days. You mentioned pineapple knots earlier. I use method for interweaving two turksheads for a pineapple knot that I do without really thinking about it and as soon as I figure out a way to explain it so it makes sense I will put it up also. The attached picture is a long one on a hiking staff with a foundation of twenty something bights (I don't remember exactly how many). Sidney Wood

[ Sidney, if you have anything you want me to upload on the main pages, I'd be thrilled. Did you have a look at "Knothead"'s site? (I'm a compulsive list maker, and so you can imagine how impressed I am with the archives!) I'm looking forward to learning from you knotters and braiders. You guys are only limited by imagination. I finally got a couple of pages up on the local isp. They are at taylortel.net/~stwood. When tou get some spare time you might look them over and see if you have a place to use this type of material. It has been 20 years since I wrote code for an interpreter but it is coming back slowly. I have a lot more material about the knots but this is the general format I will use. Sidney Wood

I am about to open a new can of worms that I haven't a clue about. I think to participate in a chat room that I probable need some software I don't have. Do you have any advice or opinions about an IRC client for Firefox and particularly about their addon Chatzilla ? Or anything else I might need to know to get started. Sidney Wood

One of the least confusing treatments of this kind of knots is Robert L. Woolery's "Braiding Rawhide Horse Tack". The catch is he doesn't call the basic knots turksheads but his basic knots are just that and the interweaves he gives result in type 1 or type 2 pineapple knots. Sidney Wood

If you can do a simple turkshead, any two turksheads with the same number of bights and odd parts that differ by two and are don,t violate the common divisor rule, can be interwoven for a type one pineapple knot. Braid the larger turkshead for a foundation and enter it with the running end of the smaller with an under two. Then parallel the part of the foundation on the side away from the direction of the wrap exactly till you can cross under the X under the bight at the other side. Then parallel the part on the same side of the running end back across. Any time you come to the parallel pair with the running end, split it, maintaining the parallel path with the running end. This sequence works with any size turksheads that can be braided. It is almost the same thing as raising a simple turkshead by two parts and bights by laying tracks and splitting pairs, if you are familiar with that method. Sidney Wood

I am most interested in the hosting. What would the process be. Most of what I have now is the beginnings of a conversion of a 26 page Word doc on the basic turkshead knots and some lacing techniques. I would like to get it started someplace and let it grow. The main purpose being to get some feedback (beta test , sort of). Thank you for your interest. Sidney Wood

Just wondered if they would open from an attachment and mostly if it was not bad manners or something , as I have never noticed anybody doing it. I am working on some single page stuff about braided knots and edge lacing that I thought somebody might be interested in. (actually I am using Crimson editor and firefox in place of a w.p to produce some printed archives for my own use.) Sidney Wood

Are there any problems with attaching html files with a little embedded CSS for short posts of a tutorial nature, either technical or common practice and courtesy. I have become interested in the web page thing and am using it to document stuff for my own use because it is simpler then Word to do some things I want. (a little CSS goes a long way) Sidney Wood

w:coffee: :coffee: I missed this one before. About goat lace- There is a 2/3 oz goat skin available form a couple of places that is tanned for boot lining that is usually reasonable in price. Hardke in El Paso had it last time I checked. I buy the natural (pearl) because it takes oil dye real well. One of these skins and an Aussie strander from Weavers (Tandy L.F can get you one, and I think Hidecrafters has them also) will cut a lot of lace in a short time. (any width you need) Sidney Wood

I should have said specific knot. Usually we need a given diameter to go around something. Often when the knot is for decorative purposes, a certian length would look best. What I would like is a technique to arrive in terms of lace width that would give a first approximation of the knot in by bights and parts for a given diameeter and length. A calibrated eyeball and experience works most times, but it sometimes takes several tries to get it right. With knots of odd numbered bights you have a lot of choice in part increments which helps a lot. Sidney Wood

To those of you who braid leather, what uses do you make of braided knots such as simple turksheads and pineapple type interweaves. I personally use them as binders on round braid to cover ends-- decoration on scalloped belts-- a substitute for short lengths of round braid up to about 6 inches and hat bands. Also does anybody have a method of selecting a specific for a given space. ps About the rawhide rope - its been 60 years or so but I remembering a bull hide and that you needed at least 45 feet to allow some stretch when they hit the end also dally to let a little slack and absorb some of the shock' . I don't recall another book than Grant, but Hidecrafters has a cd by Chan geer that just about covers them all. I prefer to lace in a stitching horse and use a saddle awl. you can turn the awl to 40 degrees or so and slightly overlap the holesto close the lace up a little better. MOST OF MY CUSTOMERS PREFER THE ROUND BRAID LACE IN TWO COLORS over the cordoba. scuse the caps lock. Sidney Wood
