  1. If you order a 3" cantle, it will measure 3".... fit and transitions quite a bit better. Theyve made a few other subtle changes that Kevin said were things he wanted done when he was building on Rays trees
  2. I have a question along these same lines. Is it better, if time is limited, to do one step on the entire project (ie cutting it in or beveling) per session? An example would be such as one a belt, i have done it where the entire belt was wrapped in saran and i stamped my way down it, unwrapping as i went. I have also done it where i cut the entire design in, then beveled the entire belt, and so on and so forth. I guess my thought would be that as someone who is probably not as consistant from day to day, a person would be able to tell the start and stop points.
  3. Bruse, are your Osborne's the drive punches with the flat handles?
  4. JW, you can get a 14", and for that matter a 15" too. - Bradley
  5. 10-4 JW, they both look good, i think i like the Will James more each time i see one. Bruce is point-on with the punchy comment. Its about the punchiest.
  6. Punchy is a state of mind that many attempt, and few fully achieve. JW, is that the Lewis Tree you ordered this fall?
  7. Super nice guy and super to deal with. He trades a few machines so ya might keep his number handy. are you from up this way?
  8. If you are in the Panhandle, theres a man names John Higdon in Amarillo that has a Chandler for sale. His Phone is 806-584-5099. I bought a 31-15 from him a year and a half ago, and every single problem i have ever had with it, hes been great to help. Even going as far as letting me bring it back to time etc. Super good guy.
  9. I had a set of patterns from tandy that were the one pattern/3 style on one sheet. what i did was cut the largest style out of paper, traced it onto a large piece of poster board, then kept trimming at the dotted lines, tracing on poster board after each one. You will trash your first pattern set, but the poster board ones will be more usable anyways.
  10. You could always go smoke a fatty with him. Im sure it wouldnt hurt!
  11. I know a guy that does this pattern on a few saddles and he had Bob Beard make a double beveler that is about an inch long. he said onthose long passes it helps a bunch.
  12. Hey guys, Im not sure if very many people are aware of this, but Lewis Saddle Trees is under new ownership. This occurred a while ago, actually. I am the "apprentice" of the shop, and just thought i would spread the word. We are hoping its a better product than before. Some of you may know Kevin Johnson, he's a saddle maker / horseshoer. Kevin and his partner Cody Parks build all of the trees (about 10 a week) with the exception of the small handful i build. There has been some renewed interest and a couple of customers come back. Just give a holler, phone number is 806-364-0102 and the e-mail is lewissaddletree@hotmail.com. Thanks for your time. - Bradley
  13. Well as was said before, its not just older people. Im 25 years old and still carry a checkbook AND a day planner. Most of my customers (I'm a rural Ag Banker) carry both too. for farmers and cattlemen, the check is the best way to pay, since it provides easier record keeping. An in this part of the world, the farmer and cattleman are the normal, average leather customer.
  14. Occasionally, Tandy will run a sale on them for (about) half price. Or they send out some 1/2 off coupons some times too. Thats how ive bought the 2 i have.
  15. My personal opinion is I like how deep your tooling is. It reminds me of the Howard Council style. I dig it!
  16. I must say i do appreciate this wealth of knowledge! I got to looking through the rest of the tools last night and am equally stumped by them. The first is a small edger (i believe) and another tool (unknown) marker USMC. Theres also a set of punches marked (if memory serves me right) W.M. Johnson. Ill post pictures tomorrow.
  17. Well that tells me worlds more than i knew. Ill try and find my camera cord and upload some pictures of the edgers. Theyre just a common style and worn out. How do the Shapleighs compare to the rest of the golden oldies? (Rose, Gomph, Old Osbornes, etc)
  18. Hey Guys, i was looking thru my old mans toolbox the other day and ran across an old round knive and 4 edgers (all have had their fair share of use.) I really didnt think much of it until i started cleaning them up and found the Shapleigh Diamond Edge logo on the round knife, and one of the edgers. Ive looked on the internet and here and all ive ever seen is the round knives, not the edgers. Can anyone give me some info as to the era of these tools? They were my great granfathers, he had a boot shop in Dalhart, Tx until about the 50's. Any kinda info would be cool. Thanks! Bradley
  19. A tree maker that i know a lot of guys in the panhandle of Texas are big on is Ray Lewis. They're fiberglass over wood trees. Lewis Saddle Tree Co. 103 Ave E Hereford Texas 79045 1-806-364-0102 http://lewissaddleshop.com/tree/index.html Rayl@wtrt.net
  20. Yessir, I am. Does the direction of the winding on the bobbin make a difference? I will try to take some pictures and/or a video this evening.
  21. I just bought a 31-15 yesterday. I sewed on it right before i bought it and it was a champ. But then i loaded it in my pick up, took it hime, and now it wont sew. All of the top tread seems to be feeding fine, it just wont catch the bobbin thread. I have my needle in right, and a bobbin full of thread. i can roll it over by hand, and it will loosely catch, but as soon as i put the power to it, it pulls through. Any help is greatly appreciated!
