I enjoy making things and have sewn all of my own garments for many years.....except for footwear. Now I'm trying to teach myself how to sew moccasins, am laying in supplies and gathering patterns. I look forward to this being a good, lasting experience.

How did you find leatherworker.net?
Googled something which took me to the forum

Thanks much!

You might look into a travois, I believe much of it is made from leather or canvas and if you like making things, it might be fun for you before you ever introduce it to your dogs. Good luck!

I'll be 45 this Saturday and part Czechoslovakian, which isn't even a country anymore!

Hello I'm gathering supplies to begin making moccasins from 9-ounce buffalo. Bought a used but much-adored Consew 228 and have a question about bonded polyester thread vs nylon. It's been recommended that I use Coats Star Ultra Dee DB138 for the sole work and the same in DB92 for everything else. So far I've had an easier time finding the same weight in 100% nylon marine thread. Will the marine thread work just as well, or will the nylon be too hard on the holes as the moccasin wears, and I really should hold out for the cotton/poly blend? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Sandal And Shoe Making
pearlygirl555 replied to builderofstuff's topic in Shoes, Boots, Sandals and Moccassins
Hello, I'm new here myself and also new to making moccasins. I have found some patterns by doing Google searches along the lines of "Chippewa moccasin patterns" and have found loads of interesting articles. I've searched various tribal groups and used different search terms, but it seems like once I start looking, it isn't too long before I'm on the right path. Many of the patterns I've found are more line drawings and descriptions of how you can take one or two pieces of leather and turn it into a moccasin; I've sewn some in fabric as practice and have been pleased with the result. Good luck! -
Thanks to you both for your friendly replies! Yes, I plan to spend more time looking through the forums, got a little exploring done yesterday and more yet this afternoon. Knowing the Google format for searching this site is particularly helpful, thanks much for posting it. I had been looking for a different format based on some other chat forums I'm familiar with, this one is laid out a little differently. Have a good one!

Ooo, you've got good smileys here! I've joined your forums because they look friendly and I'm teaching myself to make moccasins, so I'm sure I'll be asking a few questions. In fact, I have a couple right off the bat: The style of moccasin I'm embarking on first will be machine-sewn and it's been recommended that I get Star Ultra Dee DB-138 for making the soles, and the same thing in DB-92 for everything else. Any day now three hides of 8oz buffalo will be showing up, so the thread will be used on that. As I look online I see a lot of similar thread that is for marine use and seems to be all polyester rather than the bonded cotton/poly; can I use this instead? I understand that you'd like the thread to not cut through the material being sewn, but the descriptions I'm reading for the marine thread make it seem not too harsh. Also have a friend who would like to make a skiving knife for me. Do they all have that flattened mushroom look, or will a flat curved blade work as well? I had a poke around the site and realize there is a ton to see here. The galleries and member links I've followed so far have featured amazing work! Is there a page that has answers to questions like those I've asked, which are probably ones the longstanding members have answered ad nauseum? Or does one just continue to barge in and ask the equivalent of "how do I tie my shoe" when flummoxed? Thanks in advance for any and all clues, hope everyone is having a great day!
